The USC Scripter is a bit of a special award each year. It is the only award I can think of that is actually awarded not only to the adapted screenplay, but also to the original source material the adaptation comes from, be it another film, book, play, or short story. This year we find a few unexpected choices thrown in with the usual suspects of Descendants and Moneyball.
A DANGEROUS METHOD
Christopher Hampton
Adapted from the nonfiction book A Most Dangerous Method: The Story of Jung, Freud, and Sabina Spielrein by John Kerr and the 2002 stage play The Talking Cure by Hampton
THE DESCENDANTS
Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon & Jim Rash
Adapted from Kaui Hart Hemmings' novel (itself an expansion of her first published short story, The Minor Wars)
JANE EYRE
Moira Buffini
Adapted from the 1847 book by Charlotte Bronte
MONEYBALL
Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin & Stan Chervin
Based on Michael Lewis' book, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game
TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY
Bridget O'Connor & Peter Straughan
Based on the novel by John le Carre
