This is certainly a case of too much of a good thing. Everyone loved the minions in both Despicable Me films, but that's for a reason. The main storyline was always about Gru and the 3 girls, and whatever baddie they were matched up against. The minions brought the silly moments of slapstick that made those films even more fun. But what happens when you try to make a feature of those jokes? They become one-note and fall flat very, very quickly. Unfortunately that's what we have with Minions.
I give praise to the filmmakers for giving this silly attempt at yet more Minion merchandise marketing their best try, but it simply does not hold up the same. The "evil" Scarlet Overkill is way over-the-top, mean, and once I realized it was Sandra Bullock's voice...I kinda had a hard time taking her seriously. Who thinks Sandy B is evil!!?? It also doesn't help that most of the film we're waiting to see the character(s) we already know.
While the smaller kids will love it because it's silly and well...Minions!...the parents in the crowd are definitely less likely to be entertained.
My rating: C+
