Critics Top 10 -- Kenneth Turan (Los Angeles Times)

Claiming not to be able to choose only 10, Kenneth Turan over at the LA Times chose 14 films this year, giving his top spot to Brooklyn! He also doesn't rank them, but instead presents them all alphabetically as equals. While naming Amy as one of his choices, he also mentioned We Come as Friends, Meru, and Listen To Me Marlon as other worthy documentaries. Also when mentioning Inside Out, he also singled out Shaun the Sheep & When Marie Was There as worthy animated fare. And finally when mentioning Son of Saul, he also brought up Phoenix & The Second Mother as foreign-language worthy.

BROOKLYN (#1 of the Year)

One of the very first films I saw in 2015 stayed with me longest and made the most powerful impression. That would be Brooklyn, adapted from Colm Toibin's novel by Nick Hornby, directed by John Crowley and starring Saoirse Ronan. A feast of rich emotions presented with wit, grace and not a trace of sentimentality, this is the kind of film I'm always looking for but rarely find.

AMY

Asif Kapadia's devastating work allows us to, in a sense, live singer Amy Winehouse's life along with her. 

THE BIG SHORT

A surprisingly funny film about the deadly serious 2008 global financial crisis.

BRIDGE OF SPIES

Steven Spielberg's tale of Cold War derring-do reminds us that proficient storytelling isn't something we see every day.

CAROL

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara create the feelings and emotions that all the best love stories aspire to.

45 YEARS

Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay excel as a long-married couple in this measured yet provocative film.

INSIDE OUT

Pixar's triumph not only goes to places other animation creators don't dare, it goes to places the rest of the pack don't even know exist.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

A barnburner of a post-apocalyptic extravaganza in which sizzling, unsettling images are the order of the day.

THE MARTIAN

A triumph for star Matt Damon and director Ridley Scott, who know their way around mainstream entertainment.

ROOM

Transcendently acted by Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, Room is several things by turn: creepy, frightening, exhilarating and then frightening and exhilarating all over again.

SON OF SAUL

From Hungary, a Holocaust film unlike anything you've ever seen before.

SPOTLIGHT

The screenplay is self-effacing, the direction intentionally low-key; the fistful of top actors blend into an eloquent ensemble. The result is a knockout.

STEVE JOBS

This riveting dramatization of a life is an impressionistic construct that makes rich theatrical use of the building block of one man's existence.

TESTAMENT OF YOUTH

Based on an acclaimed World War I memoir, it tells the kind of potent, many-sided story whose complexities come courtesy of a life that lived them all.

Critics Top 10 -- Peter Travers (Rolling Stone)

Peter Travers has released his top 10 (11) of the year, as listed several more as honorable mentions, including Son of Saul, The Revenant, Room, The Big Short, Mississippi Grind, Ex Machina, Sicario, Love & Mercy, The End of the Tour, CLouds of Sils Maria, The Diary of a Teenage Girl & Amy.

10. INSIDE OUT / ANOMALISA (tie)

If you still don't think animation is an art form, try Pete Docter's Pixar masterpiece about the emotions that rule us. Or get lost in the radiant sadness of Anomalisa, a stop-motion game-changer from co-directors Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson about a one-night stand between a weary married self-help guru (David Thewlis) and a bouyant woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh). What Leigh does with her voice to create character is some kind of miracle. So's the movie.

9. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Here's the last movie I saw in 2015. J.J. Abrams' continuation of the Star Wars saga is popcorn-movie nirvana buttered with style and soul. Watching two generations of jedis blend brings an audience close to euphoria.

8. THE MARTIAN

His space crew abandons astronaut Matt Damon on Mars. The Golden Globes think it's a comedy. I think it's an exuberant take on the science of the unknown and a chance to celebrate the vibrant, virtuoso talent of director Ridley Scott.

7. TANGERINE

Yeah, Sean Baker's indie sensation is the movie shot on tricked-up iPhones. But the tech stuff is only part of what amazes. Academy prudes might not respond to live-wire performances from transgender actresses Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, as two L.A. hookers working on Christmas Eve. But what's your excuse?

6. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

Meet N.W.A., the five gangsta rappers who blew out of Compton in the 1980s. O'Shea Jackson Jr. plays his dad, Ice Cube, and Jason Mitchell nails the torment in Eazy-E. And when N.W.A. rage in "Fuck Tha Police," director F. Gary Gray hits a nerve for right now.

5. BROOKLYN

Can a movie romance charm its way to greatness? This one can. Much credit to director John Crowley and screenwriter Nick Hornby for keeping sappy out of this tale of an Irish girl coming to American in 1951. Saoirse Ronan, 21, illuminates every frame. She's an enchantress.

4. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

A hallucinatory milestone from director George Miller, who, at 70, proves himself the most vital action director in movies today. Tom Hardy excels as the futuristic road warrior, but Charlize Theron steals the show as a force of feminist nature. That's Miller for you, making a woman the redeemer in his world of fire and blood.

3. CAROL

In 1950s Manhattan, glam Cate Blanchett fixes her gaze on naive shopgirl Rooney Mara, and both turn a period piece into a timeless cry from two defiant hearts. Todd Haynes' film is perfect in every way, especially Blanchett, who just may be the best actress on the planet.

2. STEVE JOBS

This galvanizing take on Apple's contentious genius debuted to raves. Then the tide turned when the film failed to attract crowds. Screw Aaron's Sorkin's volcanic script, Danny Boyle's audacious direction and Michael Fassbenders' career-best acting in the title role. In an alarming trend, commercial failure again taints artistic success. But it's amazing.

1. SPOTLIGHT

No 2015 movie left me more choked up or rapt with admiration than Tom McCarthy's ode to old-school investigative reporting. Kudos to the year's best acting ensemble: Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery and Brian d'Arcy James. At The Boston Globe in 2002, the Spotlight team nailed the Catholic Church for its legacy of child abuse and cover-ups. And the movie sets a new gold standard for 21-st century cinema about journalism.

The full list of winners and runner-ups have been announced for the Toronto Film Critics, and CAROL has taken their top prize, as well as director. Tom Hardy wins this award for the 2nd year in a row, having won for his performance in "Locke" last year. Strong showings by Ex Machina & the foreign film Phoenix as well.

305 Films Eligible for 2015 Oscars

The reminder list was released by the Academy, and for the year we have 305 eligible films. Slightly down from last year, but any year over 300 is a pretty big one. For years the total hovered in the mid-to-high 200s. Sad to see several films that I highly enjoyed left off the list, I must say. I've seen around 20 or so films from this year that haven't been considered eligible. Too bad for enjoyable gems like What We Do in the Shadows, The Final Girls, Slow West, The Duff, among many others to be forgotten.
