For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this award, it's kind of a interesting watch. This is the only award of the year that in given for BOTH the Adapted Screenplay of a book, AND the original work as well, usually a novel. Vancouver is usually an interesting group to look at, mainly for the reason that they nominate their choices somewhat later in the "oscar season", and also choose only 3 per category. That said, a lot of the those choices can usually be considered as "front-runners."

The second of the guilds to announce this year, the PGA has released it's nominees for 2010. No really big surprises, except for both 127 Hours & The Town making this list, while Indy favorite Winter's Bone was left off.

Also, in the Animated category, both Tangled & The Illusionist, presumably the 2 films in best running for the 3rd spot (Dragon & Toy Story are locks), both missed out in favor of Dreamworks' Despicable Me. So the plot thickens in the animated race.

Awards -- Golden Globe Awards

The 2nd biggest award show of the year has announced their nominees. Leading the pack with 7 nods is The King's Speech, followed closely by The Fighter and The Social Network with 6. Very interesting to see Mila Kunis pop up again, after she landed a spot with the Broadcast Critics too. Maybe she has more of a shot than I thought? VERY disappointed in their choices for Musical/Comedy Film. The only film that even remotely deserves a spot there is Kids, and maybe Red. Where's Kick-Ass? Where's Scott Pilgrim? Where's Toy Story? I mean...Burlesque? Burlesque? BURLESQUE? WTF???? Being the only musical of the year should not be an automatic bid for a Golden Globe! Once again HFPA, you have let me down. Oh, and seeing the list of 5 films for animated feature makes me sad, once again, that the Academy has a ridiculous rule about an arbitrary # of films needed for be released in a year. Film should be judged on QUALITY, not QUANTITY. All 5 of these deserve an Oscar nod, but only 3 will make the cut.

One of my favorite groups to watch every year, the Broadcast Film Critics, have announced their nominees. Strong showing from many expected contenders, but leading the pack, with a whopping 12 nominations, is Black Swan!!! That is a record for the most nominations for a single film that the Broadcast Critics have ever given. The King's Speech & True Grit both ranked in just behind with 11, and Inception with 10. Taking a look at the list, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if these 10 films ended up being the exact 10 that Oscar will announce too.
