2012 Awards -- American Society of Cinematographers (ASC)

The cinematography guild has released it's nominees for the year. It shows how competitive this category is this year, as I can easily think of 5 other films that would also be worthy choices in inclusion to these fantastic selections. Great category.

ANNA KARENINA -- Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC

LES MISERABLES -- Danny Cohen, BSC

LIFE OF PI -- Claudio Miranda, ASC

LINCOLN -- Janusz Kaminski, ASC
SKYFALL -- Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC

2012 Awards -- Directors Guild of America (DGA)

The DGA is always used as a tentpole to be one of the best predictors of the films that will be nominated for Best Picture. Not necessarily the Best Director category itself, tho, which is interesting. This year, no big surprises, although 1 or 2 supposed "snubs". But here are the nominees for the 2012 DGA award...

BEN AFFLECK -- "ARGO" -- 1st nomination
KATHRYN BIGELOW -- "ZERO DARK THIRTY" -- 2nd nomination, 1 previous win
TOM HOOPER -- "LES MISERABLES" -- 3rd nomination (1 TV), 1 previous win
ANG LEE -- "LIFE OF PI" -- 4th nomination, 2 previous wins
STEVEN SPIELBERG -- "LINCOLN" -- 11th nomination, 3 previous wins

2012 Awards -- Cinema Audio Society (CAS)

And now the Sound Mixers Guild have thrown in their 2 cents in the Sound race. No big surprises here. Most of the recent years the CAS and the Oscar list match around 3/4 out of 5. Last year was a surprise with only 2, tho, so we'll see. But it does seem hard to discount any of these choices as a real possibility.

List of the 9 Foreign Language Film semi-finalists...

71 films originally qualified in the Foreign Language category, and now the semi-finalist list has been whittled down to the final 9 films still in the running. This is one of the categories that I still believe needs a bit of an overhaul to properly establish and represent the best foreign films of each year...but regardless, here is the list of the final 9. From the list, it seems like a 3 way race between Austria, Denmark & France ahead, and "Amour" deservedly way out in front. If one of these 3 films doesn't win I will be EXTREMELY surprised, but from the shortlist I have to assume that "Amour" has this race almost sewn up.

  • Austria -- "AMOUR" -- Michael Hanake
  • Canada -- "WAR WITCH" --  Kim Nguyen
  • Chile -- "NO" -- Pablo Larrain
  • Denmark -- "A ROYAL AFFAIR" -- Nikolaj Arcel
  • France -- "THE INTOUCHABLES -- Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledano
  • Iceland -- "THE DEEP" -- Baltasar Kormakur
  • Norway -- "KON-TIKI" -- Joachim Ronning & Espen Sandberg
  • Romania -- "BEYOND THE HILLS" -- Christian Mungiu
  • Switzerland -- "SISTER" -- Ursula Meier

The London critics have a few "British" categories each year, which I always get a minor kick out of. It's very rare that a film from the "Best British" category ends up in the "Best Film" category...and this year  is no exception. No crossover film. That said, strong showings from Amour, Life of Pi, and The Master across the pond!

There aren't any single city-based critics groups that I'm aware of in the state of Florida, although I'm sure both Miami and Orlando are big enough that they could have one I don't know about.
